I’m back in Arizona. GSFF is over. I flew home this morning at 7 am East Coast time, which meant I was up WAY too early, which meant I had to crash early last night and couldn’t update the Blog after the Awards Dinner.
Let me cut to the chase right away. The Falls didn’t win any awards. For features, only 2 awards were given - Best Feature and “Pick of the Flicks” (a.k.a. the audience choice award). The two features I have mentioned previously won - Black-Eyed Susan (Best Feature) and Four Dead Batteries (Pick of the Flicks). I knew going into it that those two films would win the awards they did. They deserved them! I’m not disappointed that my film didn’t win; it was an honor to be invited to be part of the event, and it was a blast being there. To be upset about the awards would be to miss the point of being in a film festival entirely.
The Awards Dinner was a great party and a fun time was had by all. The food and drink at the English Manor were terrific, and everybody looked their best. It felt a bit like a wedding reception - a cocktail hour with finger foods, then a sit-down dinner with a band and a dance floor, and every once in a while someone got up to speak. There was this one young actress dressed all in white (well, off-white) whom I jokingly referred to as “the bride.” She seemed horrified at the prospect of getting married! Anyway, the awards ceremony was again a time for emotional reflection on the passing of Robert Pastorelli, of course mixed with pride at how the festival he helped start had taken off in its second year. They say film festivals thrive on their parties, and even with that somber note this party was a great way to wrap up the festival.
The honorees - Frank Calo and Roger Paradiso - both graciously accepted their awards and made some comments about supporting independent filmmaking at all levels and how great it was to be around the energy of young up-and-comers. Joe Pantoliano, who I was hoping to meet, was absent due to a project he was shooting on location somewhere. That was disappointing, but oh well.
I spent a good part of the evening carousing with the crew from Four Dead Batteries and I expect to stay in touch with them. I also had a long talk with a reporter from the Asbury Park Press, and I was quoted in his article this morning.
Well, this week is now all about promoting the Phoenix Film Festival screenings. I’ll post in the blog as soon as there is something to report!
