Today I’m finishing principle photography on my short film “The Long Shot.” This is day 13 of the shoot, locations 17 and 18. I guess I didn’t really consider the number of locations as I was writing it, I just had this story I wanted to tell and it evolved into this very ambitious mini-feature. I mean, that’s what it feels like. This short has more locations than my feature The Falls did! And more extras, too. Working with extras can be difficult, as it adds a layer of additional confusion to the mix. Now I see why big budget features with tons of extras have lots and lots of ADs to handle them!
Even though this is day 13 of the shoot, it seems like it’s been much longer! That’s because we haven’t been shooting consecutive days, so the shoot has stretched out over 6 weeks. Add to that our issues we’ve encountered with the HDV technology (I’m going to go into more detail on that in a couple of days, but the short version of it is we lost about 1/4 of our footage on our first weekend of shooting), locations and actors being added and dropped and rescheduled, and extremes of weather usually not seen in the Phoenix area (we’ve literally shot in every possible weather condition now, from freezing cold to blistering heat, with rain dogging us for several days too) - overall, this shoot has been a bit more of a trial than the 30 days of shooting The Falls were back in 2001.
But it has not been all bad by any means! My crew and my cast have been wonderful and the footage is looking spectacular. I am chomping at the bit to see editing begin and our HDV editing suites at UAT are finally coming online so we can expect to see some progress this week. We’ve got a lot of footage - 15 hourlong HDV tapes, plus 11 or 12 sound rolls - for what is scripted as 29 minutes. I’ll be pushing my editor to get it down to 24 minutes or even less if we can. We have an “embarrassment of riches” as my writing partner Steve Briscoe says. So when all is said and done we should have a tight, fast-paced, dramatic and funny film. Can’t wait!
Okay, gotta go get prepped for guerrilla shooting in the parking lot of a Home Depot… more soon.
